Q: What is IRC?

A: IRC stands for "Internet Relay Chat". It was originally written by Jarkko Oikarinen. Since it's beginnings in Finland in 1988, it has been used in over 60 countries around the world.  IRC is a multi-user chat system, where people meet either in "channels" (virtual rooms with a certain "topic" of conversation) to talk in groups, or can engage in private conversations in /msg (message) or /dcc (direct client to client) screens.

Q: How do I get on IRC?

A: You can log onto the NEW-Enterprises IRC Network either with our JavaChat Client (you must have a java compliant browser) found on our JavaChat page or you will need to have an IRC client to connect to an IRC server. If you do not already have one on your computer, you can go to our Software page and select one to download.

Q: Which IRC client should I download?

A: This is really a question of choice.  The most popular clients for Windows operating systems are mIRC and pIRCh.  For Mac users Ircle and  Homer are the most popular and widely used clients.  For unix systems ircII and BitchX are the fav's.  There are many scripts available to customize and enhance your irc client.  A word of warning, make sure you know what your script does before you join a channel <g>.

Q: What is a script?

A: An IRC script is a small addon program written in a  "scripting language" to enhance your IRC client.  Each client may use a different scripting language and scripts may not be transferable from one client to another.

You are responsible for your own script! If your script goes off the deep end and you get banned from a channel, you will need to talk to the channel founder.  NEW-Enterprises staff does not interfere in the internal operations of channels.

If you're interested in getting a script, http://www.mircx.com is a good site with scripts available for you to try out for mIRC.  Spanners pIRCh and PiL pages has a very comprehensive library of scripts, pils and help files for pIRCh.

Also, it is virtually impossible for us to know the inner workings of every script available for each client.  Please read the FAQ's and help files that are provided with the specific script you are using so that you will know exactly what that script will do.

Q: Okay I've downloaded and installed a client now what?

A: You'll want to log onto an IRC network, like NEW-Enterprises.  Visit our Server Page for a full list of our servers.  You can also download a updated servers.ini file for mIRC and pIRCh with NEW-Enterprises's server list from our Software Page.

Q: Someone typed in colors.  How do I do that?

A: mIRC and pIRCh each support the use of colors.  Some unix clients do not, and what they see is similiar to the following: ¨text¨.

To use colors, press and hold the  Control Key and press K. You will see a code symbol in your input area that looks similiar to "¨". Now press a number from 0 to 15, and then type out your text and press enter.  Using Control-K and the number 4...will display your text in redYou can also use a colored background, by typing first your text color a comma then your background color.  For example using Control-K and 4,1 will display your text in red over a black background.

A full listing of the color codes are available in the help files withing mIRC and pIRCh.

Q: Someone said they were "Nuked ".  What did they mean?

A: Nuking is an illegal activity which is classified as a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.  It is punishable by US law.   Any individual(s) found to be participating in DoS attacks on NEW-Enterprises IRC Network can and will be banned from the Network and their ISP (Internet Service Provider) may be contacted.

NEW-Enterprises IRC Network will work with all ISP's and Law Enforcement Agencies in conjunction with DoS attacks.

NEW-Enterprises IRC Network provides users with the option to hide their hostmask by setting user mode z on.  Type: /mode nick +z to invoke hostmask hiding.  Your hostmask will appear as user@hidden.yourisp.com.

Q: How do I become an IRCop?

IRC Operators are chosen by Server Admins. They are people that the Server Admins feel can handle the extra responsibilities involved in being an IRC Operator.

The best way to become an IRC Operator is to frequent the #freedomusa channel and help users with their problems, this will allow the Server Administrators and IRC Operators to get to know you and recognize your abilities in helping people.

Repeated O-Line begging will almost guarantee that you will not receive an O-Line.
